it depends on ur plan but the instant messaging should be free after all its a sidekick but u can go up to any tmoblie counter they will look up ur contract and tell u exactly what u can do with ur side kick so that u dont have to guess Yes...you have 2 different options:
If you are going with a regular voice plan its a $20.00/month add on for unlimted Instant, text, picture messaging, plus web browsing and email.
If you just want text mainly they have a sidekick basic plan for 29.99/month which includes all of the above and if you use it to make any calls they just charge you $0.20/minute.
