When calling a cell phone # and it rings and then there is a beep, what does that mean?

Sometimes when I call friends on their cell phones I will hear the ring and then an immediate BEEP, then the pause, then the ring, then immediate BEEP. Sometimes I don%26#39;t hear any beep. Why would it beep sometimes after a ring and sometimes not? Does it mean their phone is turned off or out of the area? Just curious. Thank you.

It means that the person you are calling is on the other line. the beep you hear is the beep for call waiting. that means they are not there...so leave a message that means no one is there or available It means they are on another call, thats the beep you are hearing. Been there, done that..:)
