polyphonic means it is a song sung by impersonaters and not the people who came out with the song eg Sweet escape would be sung by an impersonater and not Gwem Stefani.
It is done for many reasons : compatibility legal reasons and umm yah. polyphonic means the file is transfered into a way the phone can read it.. MEANING it will sound simular to the song but will have a slight resemblence to the sound of the buttons on your phone...
EXample, if you play mary had a little lamb on your phone w/just numbers.. polyphonic ringtones are basically midi file versions of ringtons that just play the music.
