What phone can i buy in the U.S. that will accomodate a sim from a different country?

i live in the Philippines, and our networks include Globe telecommunications, Smart, Sun Cellular and etc.

when i search for phones online, many are available in the U.S. that are not available here, so i plan to purchase a phone there when i travel. but some phones, especially those locked in a specific carrier will not work here. so what do you call a phone that is specifically just a handphone and not linked to a carrier?? need help. i suck at this tech stuff. :)

Answer:

Simply unlocked phones with quad bands (850, 900, 1800, and 1900 MHz) would do the job. In the US you would use plans from the GSM carriers of T-Mobile or AT%26T and not Sprint which is a CDMA (different cellular technology) carrier.
